In our worship, we are open to the new, while valuing and maintaining our traditional Episcopal liturgy.
St. Christopher’s, rather than high or low, has a broad-church worship style. Our liturgy usually follows Rite II, with other approved liturgical sources. The Holy Eucharist is at the center of worship, whether at the contemplative 8 a.m. Sunday service, the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service, in which music plays a prominent part, or the Wednesday noon service.
The sermon, whether offered by the priest or deacon, enlightens, challenges, encourages and inspires the congregation. A variety of music, from ancient to contemporary, is presented by our talented music director, choir (which includes four professional section leads) and our bell choir. Members of the congregation also sometimes accompany other musicians or solo on flute, clarinet, trumpet, guitar or other instruments.
During Lent, we offer a Stations of the Cross service on weekdays. At Easter time, we celebrate the Triduum from Maundy Thursday through the Easter Vigil, moving through solemnity to great joy. We offer an Evensong service and Lessons and Carols, as well as other special services.
Our young people serve not only as acolytes and subdeacons but also as lay Eucharistic ministers, lectors and intercessors. Children and their parents are encouraged sit up front during worship. At the end of the service, the Deacon invites all children to join her at the baptismal font for the dismissal.
