This more somber Psalm 106 contrasts with the more joyful Psalm 103 of Ash Wednesday.
Verses 19 and 20 of Psalm 106 refer to the calf-image fabricated by the people of Israel at Mt Sinai.  When God told Moses that He was thinking about destroying His people for this and other defiance and disobedience, Moses argued with God and prevailed.  Moses advocated on many other occasions for the people.
